Private Mobile Networks Supports Macro GSM for Connecting Between Networks

Private Mobile Networks, the UK provider of private GSM network technology, has announced support for GSM operator networks as an interconnect between distributed Private Mobile Network sites. Private Mobile Network traffic can now be distributed between locations over satellite or IP, or break out and pass over a national Macro GSM network.

"The use of PMN, whether from an office, in a vehicle, or as a rapid deployment unit, will usually require some form of backhaul of network traffic to a network operations centre or head office infrastructure," explained Chris Moore, sales director for Private Mobile Networks. "As far as PMN is concerned, as long as IP is supported, then the type of backhaul becomes almost irrelevant. Being able to connect over mobile, through the mobile interfaces at our UK data centres, extends the options available to our customers," adds Moore.

Network or bandwidth considerations will, typically, determine the services and functionality that will be delivered over backhaul, but the actual delivery of signalling will be exactly the same as over a standard wired Ethernet network.

The PMN Ethernet connectivity allows it to be connected through external communication devices such as satellite, microwave or wireless in remote locations, or a fixed IP Backhaul such as IP Broadband or a VPN where available. PMN delivers Private GSM. To extend the Private GSM network into a multi-site network or give it connectivity to the outside world requires an interconnect that provides a secure service.

Satellite is a global method of backhauling IP traffic and is the preferred method for many PMN deployments due to its flexibility, ease of setup and relative cost. Terminals can range from large-scale fixed installations to notebook-sized BGAN terminals with varying levels of frequencies and bandwidth available. The military, for instance, have dedicated frequency bands and satellites to route their secure traffic.

Private Mobile eXchange (PMX) is a mobile network switching subsystem, implemented in software, with all the components for switching mobile calls, switching short message service calls, storing and transmitting SMS and providing Packet Data (GPRS and EDGE) in software, complete with translation and routing tables to act as a replacement PBX and/or MSC. PMX is a GSM product - 2G and 2.5G (with packet data optional). The GSM voice calls and SMS are compatible with both 3G and 2G phones and terminals.

PMN solutions are deployed in the UK under the TeleWare low power GSM spectrum licence. Overseas, local low or high power spectrum licences are required.

Private Mobile Networks-Private GSM and IP Solutions

Private Mobile Networks (PMN) provide the ability to access voice services using mobile handsets over a private GSM network. With PMN, the mobile phone can be the handset of choice for financial and practical reasons by replicating a cellular network in software and inter-operating with IP/SIP devices and applications.

PMN can be deployed into areas where network integration and infrastructure costs would otherwise be prohibitive or into areas of high mobile usage with poor or no GSM network coverage, such as warehouses or in-building areas with signal disruption. The solution is ideal at temporary locations, such as in the construction and outdoor events industries. In areas where voice privacy is an issue, PMN can be implemented as localised islands of communication with the inherent security of GSM.

A Pico cell (BTS) connected to a local IP network delivers signal over low powered GSM. PMN can be deployed using a local server or as a hosted service delivering a Private Mobile Extension.

Increase in-building coverage using mobile handsets operating as PBX extensions also increases the ability to contact employees, reduces time to respond to customer and colleague queries, and provides a platform for quicker decision-making. A PMN also gives enterprises the ability to control and monitor and the potential to decrease mobile spend selectively.

PMN enables mobile phones to become part of the internal telephony infrastructure while near the workplace. Users are able to access the same services and features using a fixed extension on the corporate PBX or on their mobile phone. PMN can be implemented either by replacement of the PBX or by integration with the existing PBX infrastructure.

Use of applications on the mobile phone can be simplified using Mobile Office software which provides a menu-based interface to conferencing, call recording and call transfer and delivers this functionality to mobile handsets even when roaming.

Brazilian Operators Introduce Fourth-Generation Mobile Communication Standard

In June 2012 Telecom regulator ANATEL conducted a frequency auction for the 2,500MHz and 450MHz frequencies to be used for the 4G networks. Besides the established mobile network operators Vivo, Claro, Tim and Oi, pay TV providers Sky and Sunrise were also able to secure licences for some attractive local markets.

Driven by the increased data hunger of mobile devices as a result of broadband applications such as social networks, video-streaming and also mobile TV, the network rollout is now rapidly getting underway after the auction. In urban areas, licences came with requirements for preferred coverage of venues for the Confed Cup 2013 and World Cup 2014. There are also requirements to provide service in rural areas.

Besides frequency allocation, ANATEL in Brazil is responsible for approving the products and vendors of the networks. Due to the fact that low-grade and cheap components led to problems with network quality (call drops, static, low data rate) in the past, ANATEL is placing large emphasis on the use of high-quality technology.

Quarter wavelength stubs have proven to be very effective because they divert high currents to ground. Another advantage is the low residual pulse energy lead to the protected side. In addition to the well-known product range for the mobile communication networks GSM900, GSM1800, UMTS and WLAN, SPINNER can now offer a surge protector with a quarter wavelength stub for the Tetra network, too.

The well-designed combination of transformer elements allows us to cut the length of the stub, which would usually have to be about 20cm for the Tetra network frequencies, to one third. The resulting compact shape opens up possibilities of using the protector in locations where low weight is an advantage and where only limited installation space is available.
